Matthew Wallwork

Building Designer

What is your background?

I have a degree in Architecture from UWA in 1991, worked for several architects in Perth & Melbourne before establishing Ecotecture in 1997. I have won 2 Fremantle Heritage Awards for Heritage Infill projects, completed the Smart Plus Passive House course in 2019, and have over 50 projects realised. I am currently the Chair of SPN & Secretary of the Fremantle Society.

What are you doing presently?

I am presently focusing on Sustainable infill developments where trees and buildings are retained where possible, and smaller footprint dwellings are created producing people friendly environments that tackle our problem of loneliness. I am also continuing my passion for Passive Solar Design, and have added Passive House as an area of expertise. I continue to creatively explore the use of recycled materials in construction, and believe beautiful buildings creative happier people.

What is your vision and where would you like to make a difference?

My vision is for the city of Perth to be transformed from an endless sea of largely lifeless suburbs, into a greener, denser & much more community oriented place where shade and human interaction abound.

What is something about you outside your career that people might not expect?

I am developing a unique “Jungle garden” at my home in Coolbellup using mainly waterwise succulents & other appropriate plant species to demonstrate how your garden really can be “the best room of your house”. The idea is that by creating a very inviting “outdoor room'”, you are continually drawn outside with a lot of health benefits.
